I completely agree with putting "The Haunting" (original) on this list. I can't think of too many things scarier than being trapped in a room, with Something Scary outside trying to get in, and you see that doorknob turning. Yikes!
It leaves our imagination to fill in the blanks about what that Something is, what It looks like and what It will do when It catches us.
Re: "The Shining"
I watched this on TV one evening while partaking of brownies (if you get my drift) with some friends. After it ended, I went out into the dark and started toward my car. One of the guys came up behind me in the dark and said, "Don't forget to look in the back seat." I was in such a state after the movie, I just about jumped out of my shoes. I still get the creeps thinking about that. Ah, memories.

Yup, can't argue with (or think of anything better to add to) your list. I thought Blair Witch was good as well! ;) Another one like that (guilty pleasure?) is The Ring. Freaky.

"The Changling"! When the ball comes bouncing down the stairs--gives me shivers just thinking about it.
